Egypt Greenlights 4,000MW Solar Power Project with Masdar and Partners
The Egyptian Cabinet has given the green light for a groundbreaking solar power project, as part of the country’s aggressive push toward renewable energy. The initiative, approved during the week of August 26, 2024, involves a consortium led by UAE-based Masdar, Hassan Allam Utilities of Egypt, and Infinity Power, a subsidiary of Masdar focused on African energy projects.
This consortium is set to install a solar facility with a substantial capacity of 1,200MW, complemented by 240 MW/hour of storage batteries. Additionally, the cabinet has granted approval for a feasibility study on the potential development of a much larger 4,000MW solar power facility.
The approval comes just days after the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) signed a trilateral power purchase agreement with Masdar and Infinity Power to construct a 200 MW wind farm in Ras Ghareb, located in the Red Sea Governorate.
Beyond solar power, the same consortium is spearheading a massive 10,000MW wind farm project in Sohag Governorate, Upper Egypt, anticipated to be one of the world’s largest wind farms with an estimated cost of $10 billion. This ambitious group is also collaborating with BP on a $15 billion green hydrogen project in the Suez Canal Zone, signaling Egypt’s robust commitment to renewable energy.
In addition to these efforts, Dubai-based AMEA Power is developing two key projects in Egypt: a 500MW solar plant in Abydos, Sohag Governorate, scheduled for commissioning by October 2024, and a 500MW wind farm in Ras Ghareb, expected to be completed by July 2025.
Egypt’s recent strides in renewable energy mark the country as a leader in Africa's transition to sustainable power.
